Getting Started: Your First Patent Search
Learn how to perform your first AI-powered patent search in under 5 minutes — from describing your invention to reviewing match results.
Step 1: Register a free account at /account/register — you'll receive 5 free searches and 5 free optimizations. Step 2: On the home page, write a detailed description of your invention in the text area. Be specific about the problem it solves and how it works. Step 3: Select your target country from the dropdown. Step 4: Click 'Search Patents' and wait for the AI to analyze global patent databases. Step 5: Review your results — patents are ranked by match score from highest to lowest. Each card shows the patent number, title, inventors, filing year, status, and assignee. Step 6: Use the 'Optimize Description' button to refine your idea based on the matched patents.
How to Optimize Your Patent Description
Master the Optimize feature — learn how AI refines your description, highlights changes, and explains each modification.
The Optimize feature works in two modes: Pre-search polish — click Optimize before searching to have the AI refine your description for clarity, precision, and novelty. This is great for improving your initial draft. Post-search differentiation — after searching, click Optimize to have the AI rewrite your description to differentiate from the matched patents. This mode references specific patent numbers in its explanations. The dual-panel view shows your original text (top) and the optimized version (bottom). Changes are highlighted in yellow. Below the panels, you'll find a detailed breakdown explaining why each change was made. Both panels are editable — you can manually adjust the text further.
Choosing the Right Countries for Patent Search
A strategic guide to selecting patent jurisdictions — understand where to search first based on your market and invention type.
Start with your primary market: If you plan to manufacture or sell in China, search CNIPA first. For the US market, start with USPTO. For European markets, search EPO. Cover PCT for international applications: WIPO/PCT patents can indicate international filing intent. Search major tech hubs: Japan (JPO), South Korea (KIPO), and Germany (DPMA) are critical for electronics, mechanics, and industrial inventions. Don't overlook emerging markets: India (IPO) and Brazil (INPI) have growing patent activity in software and pharmaceuticals. Pro tip: Use the monthly plan for unlimited multi-country searches — this is the most cost-effective way to conduct comprehensive freedom-to-operate analyses.
