Writing a patent brief before the first search session
2026-07-31
← Back to BlogBefore your first prior-art search, write a one-page brief that states the invention in functional terms, lists the distinctive features you expect to defend, and names three to five keyword clusters to start with. The brief serves three purposes: it forces you to articulate what is novel before the search begins, it gives keyword expansion a boundary so you do not drift into adjacent art unnecessarily, and it travels with the workspace into counsel handoff as a statement of what you were looking for versus what you found. AutoPatent workspaces include a brief field that preserves this document alongside your search results and pinned references. The brief is an organizational aid, not a legal conclusion about novelty or claim scope. Contact: sapsap@qq.com.
